GARFIELD PLUS DEAR ABBEY

A couple years ago, my good friend Van D told me about a great website called Garfield Minus Garfield. The premise is simple: remove Garfield from his own comic strip, and you're left with John's neurotic, anxiety riddled, existential ramblings. The effect is suprisingly insightful and sometimes hilarious.

When I moved to Maine last year, I began reading the Bangor Daily News (or the BDN to all the cool people). Since I always turn to the comics first, I noticed something funny right away. The BDN ran Dear Abbey in the middle of the comics right under Garfield:

However, when you folded the newspaper in half to read it at the breakfast table (like all good-hearted people do), the headline for the Dear Abbey column was directly under the Garfield cartoon like a caption:

Sometimes the combination of Dear Abbey's oddly bizarre and out of context headline, combined with Garfield's surreal half witicisms produced a mildly amusing juxtaposition. I thought I had discovered my ticket out of poverty! I would start a website called Garfield Plus Dear Abbey, and it would be the next internet meme! Alas, like everything I find that is unique and that I enjoy, it was taken away from me ( CremaCoat cough syrup, Kurt Cobain, Arrested Development). The BDN redesigned the comics page, and Garfield Plus Dear Abbey was no more.

Assuming that this treasure trove of morning comic gold would continue forever, I didn't save as many of these clippings as I should have, but here are a few of my favorites:

*sigh*
I just wish there had been a Dear Abbey headline about lasagne. That would have really made my life complete. I guess I'll just have to keep searching.....

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I just finished my annual New Year's Eve viewing of The Hudsucker Proxy. It's one of the most underrated movies of all time, and a great movie to watch on NYE.
Have a safe, prosperous, healthy, productive, kind, rewarding, happy, drama-free (unless you like going to plays), surprising, rad, heartwarming, festive, joyful, green, astonishing, funny, and super awesome 2011!

DATING MYSELF

You know you're old when:

Your doctor is younger than you.

All slang starts to sound ridiculous.

One of your younger facebook friends comments on how creepy it was that some guy (who happens to be the same age as you) was hitting on her friend.

You hear "45" and think of a vinyl record, not a gun.

You remember cords on phones.

You refer to an iPod as a "contraption."

The guy at the grocery store calls you "sir."

You prefer every band's "older, better" music.

You owned a typewriter.

You need to get an 8 year old to show you how to work the DVR.

One word: Matlock.

You remember Michael Jackson as a young black man, not an old white woman.

All the best athletes from your childhood are now fat coaches.

The bouncer apologizes after carding you.

Instead of laughing at those silly motorized chairs that go up stairs, you start wondering how much they cost.

Every young person is attractive, simply because they're young.

You long for the pre DNA days when serial killing was so much easier. (just kidding, just kidding...........I actually enjoy the challenge)

You've seen somebody smoking on a plane in your lifetime.

Wide ties have been popular and unpopular more than twice each in your lifetime.

All your favorite actors start dying.

You care less about the future of the planet, and more about always knowing where the closest bathroom is.

You watch CBS (sorry- I'm contractually obligated to make at least one "old people watch CBS" joke).

You can remember when Sally Struthers was hot.

You know who Sally Struthers is.

You forgot what the category was half way through this list.

Now I have to go eat some fiber, bitch about skateboarders, horribly mispronounce some young celebrity's name, and write a letter to the newspaper (whatever the hell that is).

100th POST

My 100th post!

This started as a poker blog called FELT UP a little over a year ago. It evolved into a space for writing about pop culture and such called THROWIN' ROCKS. Since I started it I have:

•Lost almost 100 pounds (that's about a pound per post for those of you not very good at math. I still need to write another 50 posts or so if you know what I mean...)

•Doubled my readership from one to two people (that's a 100% increase for the math challenged).

•Started going to the dentist again after five years and had a root canal, six fillings, scaling and planing, and learned how to bloody well brush my teeth.

•Finally got up the nerve to go to a doctor for only the second time in the past 25 years and was incredibly relieved to find out that I don't have diabetes, but I do have hypothyroidism, which I now take medicine for.

•Completed 18 paintings and sold five.

•Memorized every U.S. state capital.

•Watched over 200 movies (again, that's one every other day for the numerically impeded).

•Finished 5th in the 4th Annual Turkey Cup (the 3rd Annual Turkey Cup was the poker tourney that originally inspired me to start this blog).

•Realized how old and how young I am at the same time.

•Discovered the joy of betting on fantasy football.

• Got a driver's license after not having one for 17 years.

It's been a great year, and 2011 is going to be even better, but I'm still unemployed and looking for a place to move, so if you know of anything, let me know!

Thank you for your continued support (both of you).

TALES FROM THE THEATER: PAPERWORK

.

I found a dead guy at work one night.

Well, technically he wasn't quite dead yet when I found him, so I guess I saw a guy die at work.

David, the night usher, had come up to me one evening fairly agitated saying that somebody was in the bathroom. This in itself did not strike me as noteworthy, but he seemed flustered. I couldn't get a straight answer out of him. He just kept saying that there was a guy in a stall who wouldn't come out. Since David was prone to dramatics and hyperbole, I wasn't too concerned, but he was acting really weird even for him, so figured I'd better check it out.

I made my way down to the men's room by theater #2. I noticed an odd smell when I entered the bathroom, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a public restroom next to a theater that seats 620 people. The door to the handicapped stall was closed, and I could see some bags and stuff on the floor. I knocked, but there was no response. Someone was definitely in there, but I couldn't hear anything. I opened the door to the next stall, and that's when I saw his head. It was sticking under the partition between the stalls. At first it looked like a severed head just lying on the ground, but then I realized that it was still attached to a body lying in the next stall.

There was white foam all around his mouth and his face was a horrible shade of lavender with white blotchy spots. I think I said "Holy shit" out loud and then "Oh no. Oh no." I could hear my voice echoing off the walls of the bathroom like a soundtrack I was listening to, not creating. I stared at his face and he stared back at me, but his eyes didn't have any life in them. His stare was completely blank. Just then his mouth gurgled and the foam started bubbling. I grabbed my walkie talkie and called for the detail cop. Miraculously, he answered right away. I told him to hurry to the first floor men's room, that it was an emergency. The gurgling continued but his head remained perfectly still and his eyes never blinked.

At this point, David walked into the bathroom. He still had a confused, panicked look on his face. I started to wonder if he had seen the head earlier and went into shock. I told him to go outside and make sure nobody came in. That special week of corporate McTraining I had attended a couple of months before was really paying dividends. Although, I don't recall them covering finding a dying person, so maybe it was my own crisis management instincts kicking in. Using a pocket knife I jimmied open the door to the handicapped stall. Now I was looking at a body with no head. A body with it's pants around it's ankles and a needle still sticking out of it's arm. It looked like he had been sitting on the toilet and then fell off sideways, with his head sliding under the partition.

The cop came rushing in at this point. He must have read the panic in David's eyes, because he was definitely moving with a sense of urgency. He came into the stall and immediately pulled a pair of latex gloves out of his back pocket. He quietly grabbed the guys legs and pulled him completely into the handicapped stall. The guy was kind of on his side at this point, and the gurgling had stopped. The cop took a good look at his face and said "Oh boy." He called the paramedics on his radio, and then took a closer look at the guy's entirely blue face by now.

"You just found him like this?" he asked.

"Yeah, about two minutes ago."

The cop reached down and turned the guy's face up a little.

"I don't think CPR is going to help this guy. Better wait for the medics..." he stood up and we just silently stared at the body on the floor. I looked around the stall and saw a half full plastic CVS bag, and a winter coat lying in the corner. Both standard issue for the homeless guys who frequented the theater. I don't know how long we stood there, but the EMTs showed up fast. All of a sudden, the bathroom was full of three or four paramedics with bags and equipment. I stood back as they surrounded the body.

That's when the guy shit all over the place. You know that myth about people's sphincters releasing when they die? Yeah, it's not a myth. My mind went to it's happy place. This was getting surreal. The EMTs cleared the guy's mouth and applied an oxygen pump. One started applying pressure to his chest while yet another checked his pulse. The whole time they were talking to each other.

"Did you see Chet at Andrea's party?"

"No, did he show up late?"

"Must have. I never know what that guy is thinking. You going bowling on Friday?"

"No. I hate those bullshit work parties."

A fourth paramedic knelt next to the body and pulled out a huge needle. He plunged the needle into the guy's chest Pulp Fiction style. I thought that shit was only in movies. Another myth proven true. The EMTs checked his neck for a pulse while stopping with the oxygen pump.

"Nah." said one.

Two more fire department paramedics appeared with a stretcher, and they all quickly lifted the guy onto the stretcher and put a blanket over him while continuing their small talk. They wheeled him out and packed up their bags. The cop followed them out. It was just me left standing in the empty bathroom alone. As I looked around I thought "Great. Now I have to write an incident report."

I wondered who the guy was. Maybe he was just a junkie who rolled the dice and met an inevitable end, but somewhere somebody had just lost a son, maybe a brother or a friend.......When it's my time to go, I sure as hell don't want to go like that, with a bunch of apathetic people standing around talking about potato salad at a BBQ and some asshole worried about paperwork.

TV REVIEW: PEEP SHOW

The other night I was watching one of my favorite shows, Louie, on Hulu.com, and one of those annoying messages popped up. You know, the ones that use the name from your account to try and make it look like a personal message. Like "Hey darthvader69, Do you need affordable car insurance?" or they just use the first part of the name "Hi darth, Would you like to meet single women in _________ (enter your area here)?" Well, this time a recommendation popped up suggesting that if I liked Louie, I might like Peep Show. I had never heard of it, but Ricky Gervais said it was the show he was most excited to watch, so it had to be good right?

Peep Show is the next Brittish show that will be better than the American rip off whenever they get around to making it. Peep Show was a critically acclaimed show with low ratings that DVD sales saved (Family Guy anyone?). Peep Show follows the lives of two schmoes named Mark and Jeremy. It uses POV angles and voiceovers of what the characters are thinking. Mark is a modern day Candide who is four times more neurotic than Woody Allen, which is not surprising because the voiceover concept on Peep show was inspired by the subtitles in Annie Hall used to express the characters real thoughts. Jeremy is the lovable bumbling idiot, but he does some pretty horrible things. Think a drug addled, perverted Kramer. The two live a Ziggy-like existence in their crappy apartment, never winning as they wander through a confusing world, both supporting and sabotaging each other as they try to find love and happiness.

Peep Show manages to be very dark and yet reassuring at the same time. Not an easy tight rope to walk. Mark is an everyman, with the worries and insecurities that we all have. At one point he finally gets a girlfriend, and he sits in a coffee shop with her thinking to himself: "Look at me! I'm finally a normal person! With a girlfriend and the newspaper and drinking coffee. Nobody can deny that!" Jeremy is a Nigel Tufnel-like character (Spinal Tap is one of the many cool pop culture references on the show) who you forgive for his id-driven behavior because it's not your job to be as confused as him. It is of course a buddy show at heart, but you cringe and laugh at them more than laughing with them. There are no happy endings, but they're always amusing.

The show completely won me over when, in one episode, Jeremy and his friend Super Hans (any show with a character named Super Hans has to be good) are discussing whether to only serve heavy, organic beer at the pub they have been given to run by a mentally unstable woman.

Jeremy: "We should have lager. And nuts."

Super Hans: "No."

Jeremy: "But people like lager and nuts."

Super Hans: "People like Coldplay and voting for Nazis. They're not to be trusted."

The shaky POV gimmick gets a little old, and fortunately they used it less and less in later seasons. The inner dialogues continue to be hilarious, and the show is intelligent and fast paced. It's refreshing to see normal looking people living in a normal, crummy apartment having regular problems. Peep Show is the polar opposite of Friends. If you like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Louie, and The League (all great F/X Network shows) then you'll probably like Peep Show too. If nothing else you'll learn some funny Brittish slang.

The first 6 seasons of Peep Show are available for free here. The 7th season starts on November 26th on BBC 4.

BLACK & BLUE = PURPLE

Great news everybody! You don't have to read my rantings and ravings about the Vikings here any more. I'm doing that now over at Talking Football Live in a little blog called BLACK & BLUE = PURPLE. Talking Football Live is a fun weekly radio show that streams over on Liquid Lightning Energy Radio every Friday from 3-5pm. It's hosted by a couple of guys from Jersey (we can forgive them for that though right?) and they cover the Giants and all of the NFL plus some college ball. It's a fun show, and I feel the need to represent Midwestern fans! Tune in and check out the website!
I post every Wednesday, and my latest column for Week 11 is here...

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PURPLE #84 JERSEYS WERE PROBABLY SOLD IN THE PAST MONTH???

Sorry to lay two bitching about the Vikings posts in a row on you, but when it rains it pours.
Being a Vikings fan is a solitary, pessimistic existence. I've explained what it's like to root for the Vikes in the past. Whenever something good starts to happen, we know that some horrible backlash will be visited upon us threefold. It's a sort of inverse, perverse, reverse karma. Starting to build some momentum in the early 90's? Don't worry, your GM will trade away the future of your franchise for a bust of a running back that would rather bobsled than play for the team that mortgaged it's soul for him! Have a place kicker who has been perfect all year? Well, at the end of the season he's going to miss the only field goal that matters! Draft arguably the best running back in the game and establish a dominant ground attack? He'll fumble three times in the NFC championship game. Finally get a hall of fame quarterback who can lead us to the promised land? He'll become so hated that pictures of his junk will circulate on the internet, and Saturday Night Live parodies will be the least of your worries!
I think you can see where I'm going here.
Then why should I be surprised when I log on to NFL.com yesterday and see that Moss is going to be waived by the Vikes? Not this nightmare again. I've already been through this once before, and with the same fucking player! Only in Vikings land. Back in '98, the Vikings got a steal in the 6th round when they picked up Moss. The reason he went so low was that the scouting report said that he was trouble. A discipline liability. A head case with a bad attitude. The dreaded "locker room cancer." '98 turned out to be a magical rookie year for Moss. He was a breakout star who gave our team a chance to score from anywhere on the field. It was all downhill from there. A few years in, there were whispers of missed meetings, locker room tension, and the obligatory cliched WR/QB/coach shouting matches on the sidelines. Then it really started to go south. There were run-ins with the law including Moss dragging a female meter maid with his car for half a block in downtown Minneapolis. Then he stopped running his routes when he didn't agree with the play call. Then one game he left the field early because he was pouting that poor Randy hadn't gotten the ball enough. That was it for me. He was a disgrace to the uniform, his teammates, and to the game of football itself. The Vikings wisely traded him to Oakland (where players with bad attitudes go to die) and I was glad to see him go. Glad to wave goodbye to a future hall of famer, the best deep threat in the NFL, and the most exciting player at his position since Jerry Rice. All that, and yet it was still good riddance.
Flash forward to '07. I'm living in Boston and the Patriots pick up a washed up veteran receiver for a song. He then blossoms into Moss 2.0, and it's a giant love fest in New England. He learned his lesson in Oakland, and now he was saying the right things and catching everything thrown at him. I couldn't believe my eyes. Another brilliant reclamation project by Bill Belichick. The honeymoon lasted three years before Moss started grumbling about his contract. Then he started the late for meetings thing. He was pouting in the media because he wasn't "appreciated."
When the Patriots traded Moss to the Vikings, it looked like a great deal for both teams. The Patriots got rid of that dreaded "cancer" from their locker room in the form of an aging player in the last year of his contract, while the Vikes got a desperately needed deep threat and a much needed boost of positive nostalgia. The prodigal son had returned! I was excited for a Favre to Moss touchdown! I was excited to see #84 back in Purple again! Surely he had learned his lesson by now! Nothing could possi-blye go wrong!
I guess I forgot that I was a Vikings fan for a minute.
Not to worry. I got a jarring reminder last Sunday as I watched Moss half-heartedly jog his routes, not block, and exasperatingly throw up his hands on the sideline. His body language reeked of quit. By the end of the game as I watched Moss slowly walk back to the line of scrimmage during the two minute drill as his entire team waited for him, I thought that he was up to his old tricks. Little did I know it would be even worse than that. After the game, Moss explained that he loved the Patriots, he didn't respect the Vikings, and that the coaching staff was incompetent for not following his game plan. Wow. In every profession I know of, you'd get fired for that. In some professions you'd get your legs broken or have an on the job "accident." A traitor is a traitor, and it felt like there was actually a chance that Moss had done everything in his power to throw the game. No wonder Robert Kraft was giving Moss a reach around before the game. He was still on the payroll! Moss was a double agent and he just dressed up as a Viking for Halloween! Well played Belichick, well played. The Patriots dumped a big salary, picked up a 3rd round draft pick, and got a little help winning a tough game. The Vikings got nothing but embarrassment and betrayal. Sounds about right. Par for the Purple course. At least it means that Childress will get fired, and that's a good thing for the Vikes.
Some other team will gladly pick up Moss, and he may or may not repeat his routine. I could care less. It all reminds me of that old saying about the hipocritical values of pro sports: If Jeffrey Dahmer could have run a 4.2 40 yard dash, he would have just had an "eating disorder." And I'm guilty of that attitude too. I looked the other way when Moss was embarrassing himself and the team, but still catching touchdowns and winning games.
Well, at least Moss was on the losing end of two of the most heartbreaking post season losses in the history of the NFL ('98 NFC championship and '07 Super Bowl). Maybe god really does have a sense of humor.
After all, he made me a Vikings fan.

FINALLY, FAVRE IS GETTING A LITTLE ATTENTION

Wow, do people despise Brett Favre.

I underestimated the overwhelming hate for Favre that exists. Most of it is his own fault, but this last incident is really a witch hunt meant to embarrass and ridicule him as much as possible without merit. I really shouldn't even dignify it with a response, because it's already been blown out of proportion and then beaten to death like a rented mule, but I have to make a couple points. Besides, any shred of dignity left the building a long time ago with this story.

If his pursuit of Jen Sterger was so harassing and inappropriate, why wait over two years to report it? Why not report it right away? Oh, because things were still going well with Favre and the Jets at the time and no one wanted to make waves? So they waited two years to break the story on the week that Favre was returning to play against the Jets. Interesting timing. At first I thought it was another Linda Tripp at work. Some ugly, man-hating, nosy friend of Jen Sterger whispering in her ear to tell the world what a horrible pig that asshole Favre is. Now I think it was all just a chance for Sterger to get some attention. And clearly she has a strong desire for attention judging by the whorish outfits she was barely wearing as a "Jets hostess." What the hell is a "hostess" anyway? Sounds like a euphemism for an expensive escort. I just assumed they were prearranged town pumps for the Gang Green athletes anyway, so how can you fault a guy for using a service as it was intended? That's an issue for Favre and his wife to discuss, not the league office and the general public. Sure the guy is a jerk for cheating on his wife (or trying at least), but he's not the first or the last athlete to bang a groupie. As we speak, some squeaky clean, good image, star of the team from your area is probably doing something really dirty with a woman who isn't his wife.

People had gotten so sick of Favre's own media whoring about whether he was going to retire (again) or not retire (again) that the timing was perfect to take a cheap and easy shot at him. Nobody knew who the fuck Jen Sterger was two weeks ago, but they sure as hell know who she is now. Good job Jen, because success in life isn't about working hard or class, it's about how many people google your name for whatever reason. I'm sure her career will really take off now, like Donna Rice or Mindy Lawton. Who??? Exactly. Well, at least Fireman Ed was probably tugging his fire hose to some of the pictures that turned up of her dressed in Jets stripper clothes, so she's got that going for her.

Say what you will about Favre, the guy is a warrior. Arguably one of the top three QB's of all time, starting 291 straight games in a row (315 with playoffs) at his position is a completely amazing and incomprehensible feat. How many weeks do you think you'd last with numerous 380+ pound trained athletes trying to decapitate or maim you? He's had an unbelievable career, and it's too bad that all this bullshit is going to distract from his accomplishments. It figures that as a Vikings fan we finally get a first ballot hall of famer, the most exciting QB I've ever seen play, and on top of that sticking a purple knife in the heart of our arch rivals, and it has to be tainted now by all this bullshit. He might have been a vain, overpaid, ego maniac, but he was our vain, overpaid, ego maniac. Last year was a magical season for the Vikes, but it's been all downhill since Favre threw that interception in New Orleans in the fourth quarter. He should have retired after that game. There was no way he was going to come close to repeating his amazing performance from last year, especially with a tough injury in the NFC Championship game. He should have gone out on top, but instead he tried everyone's patience beyond the breaking point in the court of public opinion, and now people jump at the chance to kick him on his way out. Demanding media attention for his retirement soap opera is just like his playing style on the field: live by the sword, die by the sword.

Lastly, there is no way those photos are legit. Even if he's a scummy cheater, Favre is not stupid enough to text photos of his privates. He's a twenty year vet. This is not his first rodeo. If he had been cheating in the past, he did a good job covering it up. Besides, those photos had certain shortcomings that nobody would be bragging about. Let's just say it was not third and long. The photos were just a perfect chance to take a shot at somebody that everyone is sick of, and willing to believe anything bad about. There's only one thing that America likes more than an underdog; watching the mighty fall. People have to get their junior high taunts in: "We hate Favre.......and he's got a small dick!" I guess only his wife knows for sure.

And maybe a few Packers "hostesses."

THE TOWN

Just saw The Town tonight, and it was great. It's the first time I've been to a movie theater in almost a year! That's one thing that sucks about living in the sticks: almost no theaters. The good news is that the closest theater only charges $6.25, and that's for an evening showing! How cool is that? You can't get a fucking sandwich for $6.25! And not a single ad before the movie!
I started thinking about my favorite Boston movies, so here it is. Everyone loves lists. It's a little Affleck heavy, seeing as he wrote three of the movies, and directed two of them. What can I say- he's a great director. And I love Justin Timberlake too, so fucking deal with it! Here's my top five Boston movies of all time:

5) The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) Good adaptation of the George V. Higgins novel. Lovable small time bumbling crooks, 70's Boston and muscle cars, plus Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle. What's not to love?

4) Good Will Hunting (1997) Sappy, but well done, and a fairytale for all aspiring buddy screenwriters.

3) The Town (2010) Incredible cast, great location shots of Boston, and a heist movie that actually keeps your attention.

2) Gone Baby Gone (2007) Gritty Boston, warts and all.

1) Mystic River (2003) Beautiful aerial shots of Boston, incredible cast (with a little overacting by Spicoli). One of the best books I've ever read, and Clint Eastwood adapted it well. This movie really captures Dennis Lehane's portrait of his hometown, Dorchester.

Honorable mention: The Verdict (1980), The Departed (2006)

TALES FROM THE THEATER: CHASING PIRATES

A couple of weekends ago, the Eastport Pirate Festival was in full swing. As I sat on the deck smoking a cigar, I could hear the festivities going on down on the waterfront including canons being fired. It all reminded me of a little story from my theater days.......

I dislocated my knee chasing pirates.

Well, technically I didn't dislocate it chasing pirates. I dislocated my knee getting into the backseat of a cop car. Either way, it's a good start for a story.

It was in 2004, and Loews had just announced a campaign to crack down on movie piracy. There was a $1000 reward for any employee who caught anybody trying to bootleg a movie. One day, we had numerous reports of somebody videotaping in theater 6, so another manager and I went to check it out. The movie was letting out, and another customer pointed out the person who had been filming. I followed the culprit and his girlfriend out of the theater while the other manager called the detail cop. The cop must have been sleeping somewhere, so I followed the couple out of the theater and up the street. By the time the detail cop caught up to where I was, they had gone into the Beantown Pub.

The cop and I went into the bar and confronted the couple. They were from Belgium, or one of those mayo-on-the-fries kind of places, and they were surprised to say the least. The cop made them show him their camera. It turns out they were taking photographs of the screen for some reason, but the camera's monitor made it look like they were filming. All pictures are prohibited, so the cop stood there as they deleted the 30 or so photos. We then left the red-faced tourists to enjoy their crappy potato skins and overpriced beer.

The cop offered me a ride back to the theater, and I gladly accepted. As I got in the back seat, I heard a horrible pop, and a lightening bolt of pain shot up my leg. I let out a blood curdling scream, and flopped on the seat. I looked down at my leg and I could see my kneecap sticking way off to the side. The pain was intense. The cop came around and called for an ambulance as soon as he saw my knee. We were in the heart of downtown near at least three hospitals, but it still took 15 minutes for the paramedics to show up. The cop was furious that it took that long when one of their own had called. I gotta say, I agreed with him. As I sat there, the cops holster was right at eye level. I can visualize the pattern of his gun's grip as if it were yesterday. The pain was so bad that I remember thinking that I could just grab the gun and shoot myself in the head. That's pretty bad when you're seriously contemplating death over putting up with another minute of torture.

Eventually they loaded me in the ambulance for a short but painfully bumpy ride to the nearest hospital. They knocked me out with some anesthesia, and reset my knee. I was in such a haze when I woke up and my roommate came to get me, that weeks later I thought I had been at a different hospital. Now I have phantom pains in my knee every time I walk by the Beantown Pub, get thrown in the back of a cop car, or hear a pirate joke.

Had I really hurt myself chasing a bounty on pirates?

Did the hospital really have to cut my best pair of dress pants and my shirt to get to my knee?

No pain medication for my recovery? What a jip......

Why do so many pirates have eye patches and striped shirts?

The biggest mystery still remains why the fuck anyone would go see Soul Plane, let alone take photos of it?!? I guess there's no accounting for European taste.

WASTING TIME

How dare you say I didn't get anything accomplished yesterday?!?!!
I'll have you know that I was promoted to "Gem Scraper" on Bejeweled Blitz for facebook! That's a full three rankings higher than my previous position of "Apprentice polisher," and it only took me two or six hours. I've been seeing those damn jewels in my sleep, but it's worth it to strive for your goals. I'm not quite good enough to go pro yet, but you have to dream.
Today is the day of worship (football) and then I can get back to painting tomorrow. Unless of course I get in a quick Bejeweled session in the morning..........Those precious stones aren't going to line themselves up, you know.

CRAZY CAT LADIES

I just rewatched Grey Gardens (1975), the groundbreaking documentary about Jackie O.'s eccentric aunt and cousin. It's basically an hour and a half audio visual definition of "crazy cat lady." They even eat cat food. Pretty amazing movie.
That got me thinking about all the famous crazy cat ladies throughout history. Of course there's the Simpsons crazy cat lady, who used to be a news anchor before everything went haywire.
Every once in awhile you hear about a rich old bat who left her fortune to her cats. At the wine shop, people would ask me about Bordeaux the cat wandering the aisles, and sometimes I'd tell them that the eccentric owner of the building had left everything to Bordeaux when she died, so the cat actually owned the store. About 98% of the people believed it no questions asked.
There is even a guy in Pennsylvania who built a village for his 660 rescued cats. Crazy cat guy? Doesn't really roll off the tongue like crazy cat lady.

But the all-time, life acheivment oscar goes to this Russian lady with 130 cats in a tiny apartment. Cats rule! Metal rulez! Mosh pits rule! And my god, that apartment must smell bad........

THE RALPHOLUTION HAS BEGUN!

I have been obsessed with Ralph Wiggum since the first time I laid eyes on him. You can ask my friends. It's all I ever talk about.

There is something in his blank stare and Zen-like stupidity that fascinates me. Is he just an idiot, or a prophet of the modern age?

I recognize something in Ralphie that is deep within all of us, whether it is his naïve sense of wonder, his ignorant bliss, or his blind faith in things he can't understand.

We can all learn something from Ralphie, even if it's just to keep our fingers out of our nose. His unintentionally ironic statements can lead us to a greater understanding of our place in a scary world.

The Ralpholution has begun! Here's your chance to join the church of Ralphie and own a piece of Him......
